Each North Spore fruiting block contains a fully colonized substrate, ensuring a successful first harvest. Our strain is selected for its ability to produce plump, dense, and visually distinctive shaggy clusters, ideal for culinary exploration.

The cultivation process is straightforward, making this kit suitable for true beginners. Simply follow the included instructions to initiate fruiting and observe the rapid development of your Lion's Mane mushrooms.

Expect to harvest your first flush of fresh mushrooms in as little as seven days. This provides a quick and rewarding introduction to home mycology.

Lion's Mane mushrooms are renowned for their versatile culinary applications. They offer a unique texture and a mild, savory flavor profile, perfect for a range of dishes.

Beyond the initial yield, this fruiting block is capable of producing multiple flushes with proper care, maximizing your harvest over time. Typically, a single block can yield between 0.5 to 2 pounds on its first flush.

As a USDA Organic certified product, this grow kit reflects North Spore's commitment to premium quality and sustainable practices, ensuring a pure and natural harvest.

Explore the world of functional fungi and enjoy the freshest possible mushrooms directly from your home. Further cultivation guidance and educational resources are available through North Spore's extensive online content.

Receiving and Storage

Remove kit from the shipping box as soon as possible. Then, unfold the top of the bag, making room for air space. It's also important to check and confirm that the filter patch is not obstructed. This will help the organism breathe and continue to thrive!

Fruiting blocks should be used within 1 week of receipt. If you don't plan to use immediately, you can refrigerate your block for up to 6 months.

Growing Instructions

For the majority of mushroom species, all that is needed to initiate fruiting (or begin the growth cycle) is a change in environmental conditions -- specifically humidity, light, temperature, and changes to oxygen and CO2 levels.

For best results:

We recommend growing your lion’s mane block in a fruiting chamber (like a monotub or martha tent) as a controlled environment will decrease the risk of contamination and increase the chances of success.

Creating optimal conditions:

The environmental parameters for lion’s mane can be found on this page under "Temp, Humidity & CO2 guide" and on page 9 of our fruiting block instruction booklet.

Preparing your block:

Tightly fold excess plastic back and place the block face up.

How to initiate fruiting:

  • Making small holes in the plastic encourages even growth which can be harvested easily and cleanly. We recommend cutting 3-4 small X’s on one plane of the bag.
  • Lion’s mane can be top or side fruited depending on preference; side fruiting can encourage elongated spines.

Special considerations:

  • Lion’s mane is prone to fruiting within the bag before being exposed to air; we do not recommend cutting holes where these fruits have begun to form.
  • Avoid direct moisture (during pinning and fruitbody phases) and excess humidity (during fruitbody phase) to prevent rot.

Harvesting your mushrooms:

Mushrooms should be harvested after teeth have formed but before they elongate. Good shelf life; will begin to yellow as they dry out.

Growing different blocks together:

With some compromise, many different species of mushrooms can be grown together in a fruiting chamber. First, consider the temperature range of the mushrooms you desire to grow, and second, the CO2 sensitivity. Humidity ranges overlap for the majority of species. We encourage you to experiment with many different groupings!

Troubleshooting:

Having issues with unusual growth, stunted growth, or no growth at all? Refer to pages 16-18 of our fruiting block instruction booklet.

Temp, Humidity, & C02 Guide

Temperature55-70°F  |  13-21°C
Humidity(Phase 1: Primordia)90-95%
Humidity(Phase 2: Fruitbody)80-90%
CO2 Sensitivity(Phase 1: Primordia)500-700 ppm
CO2 Sensitivity(Phase 2: Fruitbody)<1,000 ppm

  • Primordia -  The earliest recognizable stage of fruitbody development. Also known as “baby mushrooms” or “mushroom pins.”
  • Fruitbody - A fully grown mushroom, the reproductive structure of the organism in which the spores are produced.
  • CO2 sensitivity - When CO2 levels are too high, yields will decrease, stems will become long and stringy, caps will be small, and/or growth will halt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fruiting block kits are mushroom grow kits, but tend to be larger (5 lbs) and some require a bit more care depending on species. Instead of boxes, they are bagged. We recommend growing them in a fruiting chamber such as a monotub or martha tent set up like our BoomRoom. A controlled environment will produce the best results for the fruiting blocks. And, since these kits are slightly larger, they can produce more mushrooms than our Spray & Grow Kits.

Oyster mushrooms and lion's mane mushroom fruiting block kits are great for beginners because they are reliable producers and require the least amount of effort. Reishi is also great because the mushroom grows in the unopened bag (no special care or fruiting chamber required!)

All kits should grow a minimum of one flush of mushrooms, but with a little patience and skill you can often get a second or third flush depending on the species! After you’ve harvested your first flush of mushrooms, remove any growth from the block and follow these instructions:

⮕ If you have a martha tent or an automated fruiting chamber, leave the humidity and fan running and wait about 2 weeks for new pins to begin forming.

⮕ If you are using a monotub or non-autmated fruiting chamber, open 2x daily and spray blocks generously with water. Try not to expose the blocks for too long to decrease chances of contamination.

⮕ If you don't have a monotub, martha tent, or fruiting chamber cover the block with a humidity tent made from a large plastic grocery bag with LOTS of small, quarter-sized holes. Remove the humidity tent 2x daily and spray blocks generously with water.

Be patient: It's totally normal for it to take longer for mushrooms to appear with each subsequent fruiting. However, if there's no progress after two weeks, it’s a good idea to soak your block.

Soaking your block: Take your block out of the bag and soak in a bowl of cool water. Most species only need to soak for 20 minutes. However, only soak your lion's mane block for 5-10 minutes as these blocks tend to break apart if soaked for too long. After soaking, let the block drain by leaving it cut side down for another 10 minutes or tip it around to let extra water run off. You don't want to leave standing water in your bag, so pat your block dry with a towel before placing it back in the bag.

Note: Shiitake blocks should not be placed back in the bag.

For most species, you should leave the block in the bag for the entire duration of the growing cycle. However, there are some exceptions.

⮕ Shiitake should be removed from the bag before going into the fruiting chamber.

⮕ Nameko should have most of the top of the bag cut off (leaving about 4" of plastic above the block) before going into the fruiting chamber.

Our fruiting block kits are made from sawdust blocks that have been amended with substrate supplements.

Lion's Mane Mushroom Crab Cakes

These were so simple to grow! They took about a week and a half to be ready for harvest but once they started growing out of the bag, they were doubling in size overnight. I made crab cakes out of the flush I harvested and the texture was almost exactly like crab and lobster. They also tasted absolutely amazing! Definitely would recommend getting these. They're so easy to grow too. You just cut a couple slits in the bag and boom...you have some boomers :)

Thanks for sharing, Claire! Your grow looks amazing!

Lions Mane Success

I received the lionsmane kit for christmas in 2024. I got 3 flushes from it and they were very tasty. I had to stop when I had to leave town for a week. I asked Northspore if it would be possible to bury it in the spring. The response was "give it a try" it might work. So, I stored them in my garage over winter (its constant 50 degrees) and planned on planting it when it warmed up. Well, I forgot about them until my husband pointed out I still had it in the garage. By then it was towards the end of july. But I planted it anyway and watered it every day. Nothing happened. The third week in Sept, i took a long weekend trip with my daughter. It was very rainy when i was gone. When i got home, it fruited! Wow! But, the rain ruined it. Well, I'm hoping it fruits again this year. Wish me luck!

Thank you for sharing, Rose! Wishing you the best of luck with your lions mane block this year!

Just keeps going!

I purchased an automated monotub setup and a Lion's Mane fruiting block a few months ago. I have harvested gorgeous mushrooms from this block SEVEN times... That's right, 7... It's still going.. absolutely love the quality of y'all's products. I've also put in 300 plugs of different types, started a wine cap bed, and all 3 varieties of morels. Should be an awesome spring and fall. Thank you North Spre for making these processes so easy and user friendly. Growing my own mushrooms has always been a dream of mine. Thanks for helping bring the dream to fruition. I recommend you to people all the time.

First time trying Lion's Mane

Had great growing luck with both Blue Oyster's & Shiitake's thought I'd try Lion's Mane... grew quickly!! I made the "X"s in the bag as the directions says but the block had for the most part other growing ideas, pretty much not were the X's were.
I was able to harvest 11oz from the first growth, hopefully more will follow... Now to decide on a recipe or two :)

Thanks for sharing, Dena! Your lion's mane looks amazing!

reward point sytem counterproductive

Folks,
I have been a customer for some years, and sometimes get notices about reward points, which never seem to matter next time I buy something. I do not really care about the points, but since I support what you are trying to do, respectfully offer my feedback that reward points that are hard to use or understand come off as a scam. It creates a bad feeling. I would prefer to not even hear about them rather than hear about them and experience a moment of frustration and confusion since they do not seem real, they never materialize. Nor do I want to jump through 5 hoops to use them. Amazon does it right- every time I buy something on Amazon, my Amazon reward points are automatically subtracted from what I owe.
Just my opinion.
