As July comes to a close it is incredible to look back and realize that North Spore was only an idea shared between three friends a few months back. Since we decided to take the plunge and start our business at the end of June it has felt like a whirlwind with everything happening faster than I could have imagined. Within a month we incorporated as an LLC, signed a lease on a commercial space, set up the systems and spaces we need for mushroom production, have three batches of oyster mushrooms at different stages of development, and have been foraging and selling wild mushrooms to several restaurants in Portland and Downeast Maine. We have even set up a clean room and are well on our way to generating our own mushroom spawn for oysters and a wide range of other less common specialty mushrooms.
Since this is the first time any one of us have tried to start our own business this experience has been quite the adventure. Each day brings unforeseen difficulties and obstacles but ultimately the experience of creating something of our own by following our hearts has been extremely rewarding. Looking back at this first month I know that the progress we have made would not have been possible if it were not for all the support from family and friends and the positive reception we have received from the greater Portland community. I hope that these connections will persist and grow into the future and that North Spore will continue to be a resource and an outlet for the mushroom enthusiasts of Portland.
Although we still haven't produced any mushrooms yet, we expect to see the fruits of our labor any day now so stay posted.
